These are descriptions of the classes currently offered by the Mentoring Center. If you are interested in attending one or more these classes, you can view a schedule of upcoming trainings which includes registration information and directions to the various training sites.

Making of a Mentor/Relationship Building
This introductory course provides an opportunity to explore the role and tasks of the mentor. Participants will examine their own mentoring styles and compare the results to current research on effective mentoring relationships. The stages of the mentoring relationship will also be discussed, highlighting frequently encountered trouble spots and opportunities.
Getting the relationship off to the right start is essential in mentoring. This course will invite the participants to examine and enhance their current communication skills. Voice tone, body language, active listening, self-esteem building, and values will all be addressed through small discussion groups and experiential activities.
This course is appropriate for both new mentors and those who have already been matched to a mentee. It is appropriate for any person wishing to communicate more effectively.

Cultural Dynamics
This course explores the participants' own cultural backgrounds and how those might affect their relationships with youth. The exercises are designed to enhance participants' inter-cultural awareness so that they may support others in feeling secure with their own cultural identities. The training will also assist participants in identifying resources which can provide young people with opportunities to explore their own culture, as well as experiencing new sources of cultural diversity.

Tutoring Tips
This course provides insight on the implications of brain research and what tutors need to know to help youth succeed. Participants will examine how cultural perspectives may affect the tutoring relationship. The developmental stages of children and relationship development are also covered in this course.

Mentoring Adolescents
This training is designed to prepare mentors for working with adolescents. We will explore what adolescence is like today and the ways to develop a caring and helpful relationship with a teenager. Topics include: adolescent development and behavior, helpful skills for relating to teens, common challenges and strengths of a match with a teenager, building assets in young people, and issues that may require professional intervention.
This training is appropriate for both new mentors and those who are already matched and want to enhance their relationship.

Current Mentor Brush-Up Training
Have you ever attended a training with good information you know you're going to need, yet, once it's time to put it into practice, you can't remember everything you learned? The Mentor Brush-Up training acts as a guide in the concept- to- reality process for individuals actively engaged in mentoring who now have real life challenges and issues in terms of how to best support and guide their mentee.
